Alyssa Barker, Lorna Beasley, Ben Leivers, Lucy Needham, Heidi Wardle and Gemma Wardle
Six of our pool side helpers and swimmers successfully completed an RLSS Pool Lifeguard course during the June 2010 half term week.
As part of this course the candidates have to show their ability to perform CPR, First Aid & different pool based rescue techniques which include two timed recues;
1. Swim 20 metres and tow a conscious casualty 20 metres in 65 seconds.
2. Swim 20 metres and tow an unconscious casualty 10 metres in 45 seconds.
They also gained First Aid At Work qualifications alongside the Pool Lifeguard.
Three of these helpers (Alyssa Barker, Heidi & Gemma Wardle) and one of our teachers (Sam Wardle) then went on to successfully complete an RLSS Beach Lifeguard course in Rhyl at the beginning of July.
As part of this course as well as CPR & First Aid the candidates have to show their ability to perform rescues in the sea (battling through the waves & Jelly Fish). These rescues involve the use of more familiar rescue aids seen around most swimming pools as well as using paddle boards. There are also two timed swims, 200metres in 4 minutes & 400metres in 8 minutes.
As an extra they also achieved a qualification in Automated Defibrillation, people who are trained to use an automated external defibrillator unit (this unit gives a casualty a controlled electrical shock designed to restart the heart) can use this on a person who has collapsed and stopped breathing.
